Europe is running out of gas. America is running out of strategic oil. Both pillars of the West are simultaneously running on empty.
Europe is heading into winter with 57 percent storage โ the lowest since 2009. The United States has drained its strategic reserves to levels not seen since 1983. Rivers have run dry. Arsenals are empty. The bill is coming due.
The machine is running on fumes. On both sides of the Atlantic. At the same time.
Europe: 57 Percent, and Winter Is Coming
The numbers are stubborn. European gas storage stands at 57 percent โ a level the continent has not seen since 2009. Two months from heating season, that is an alarm signal.
LNG is more expensive. Asia is pulling cargoes eastward. Russia, once the primary supplier, is out of the picture. Europe replaced pipelines with American liquefied gas โ costlier, more volatile, subject to global competition for tankers.
Winter is coming. The tanks are half full. And no one can fill them.
The Rhine and the Danube: Nature Sabotages the Plan
The energy transition was meant to free Europe from fossil fuels. Nature itself is contradicting the plan.
The Rhine is at 43 percent of its measuring points at low level. The Danube, at 59 percent at “extremely low” level. Both of the continent’s fluvial arteries are drying up. River freight costs have tripled.
Every morning, a BASF engineer checks the Rhine level on his phone. Not out of meteorological curiosity. Because if the river is too low, the barges cannot pass. Raw materials stop arriving. The Ludwigshafen plant, the world’s largest chemical platform, is running at reduced capacity.
In Hungary, the Paks nuclear plant has shut down. Lack of water in the Danube. The worker waits. The government is asking citizens to reduce nighttime consumption. Hungary is importing twice as much electricity as before.
Austrian hydropower has dropped 30 percent. Covestro has issued a profit warning. The rivers that built the continent’s industrial power are no longer navigable. The energy transition can do nothing against a dry river.
The USA: The Shale Mirage
The United States has become the world’s leading oil producer. But this abundance is a mirage.
Strategic petroleum reserves have fallen to 347 million barrels โ the lowest level since 1983. Forty-seven million barrels have been consumed since 2023. Domestic production is posting a slight decline. Shale deposits are depleting. Companies are not reinvesting their superprofits โ they are distributing dividends, buying back shares, rewarding shareholders.
The petrodollar is faltering. America still produces. But it produces less. And what it produces no longer covers what it consumes.
The USA: Empty Arsenals
The war in Iran emptied everything. The oil reserves โ and the military arsenals.
Over 850 Tomahawks fired in a few weeks. The initial stock was around 2,200. Sixty-seven percent of Patriot missiles have been consumed. Seven hundred fifty-nine PAC-3 MSE remain. Replenishment will take years.
America waged a lightning war. It lost it. And it burned through its ammunition along with its oil.
The Bill
The 30-year Treasury yield exceeds 5 percent. The budget deficit has reached 7 percent of GDP โ around 3 trillion dollars. Second-quarter growth is plateauing at 1.5 percent.
At the pump, a gallon of gasoline costs one and a half to two times more than before the war. In Ohio, a gas station attendant has changed the numbers on his sign three times this month. Customers no longer fill up โ they put in 20 dollars, just enough to get to work. “It looks like 2008, but worse,” he says.
The bill is arriving. And no one can pay it.
The Dead End
Europe is running out of gas. America is running out of oil. Rivers have run dry. Arsenals are empty. The bill is climbing.
No one can help anyone. This is what we described on August 6:ย the fall without a net, here and now.
The Western machine is running on fumes. The engine is coughing. The gears are grinding. And there is no firefighter left.
