The awakening was brutal. Spring 2026. Exercise Aurora 26 in Sweden. Eighteen thousand NATO soldiers, thirteen nations. Facing them, Ukrainian drone operators from the Azov regiment. Their role: simulate the enemy.
In a few hours, they put armoured vehicles and entire units out of action. With drones. Small 500-dollar machines. The Ukrainians’ verdict was blunt, uncompromising: “In their current state, Western armed forces would stand no chance on a modern battlefield.”
What shocked the Ukrainian Azov operators the most? The coffee breaks. The restrictions on drones. The bureaucratic slowness. Real war does not stop for a break.
The Numbers of the Downgrading
The problem is not money. All NATO countries now reach 2% of GDP in military spending. The problem runs deeper.
The Alliance’s ammunition shortfall reaches 145 billion dollars. European stockpiles are sufficient for “a few days at most” of intense combat. There is a shortage of cotton linter, a residual cotton fibre from the textile industry, essential for manufacturing the nitrocellulose in shell propellants. Without it, no powder. Without powder, no firing.
Russia, for its part, has switched its economy to war mode. It is producing faster in artillery, missiles, and drones. The gap is widening.
The Cultural Shock
French General Fabien Mandon dared to say: “We must prepare to accept losses.” Outrage in public opinion. Blaise Metreweli, head of British intelligence, sums it up: “Europe is living between peace and war.” The Economist headlines: “European generals warn of denial in Western societies.”
European armies were designed for expeditionary operations. Afghanistan, Mali. Not for high-intensity warfare against a symmetrical adversary. They have neither the stockpiles, nor the doctrines, nor the production chains. The gap is not technological. It is mental.
2029 Is Tomorrow
The 32 NATO members have agreed on a date: 2029. That is the year Russia could challenge the Alliance, according to intelligence reports. The reconstitution of Russian forces is documented, quantified, monitored.
Less than three years remain.
Germany has launched its Zeitenwende, 100 billion euros. France is executing its 2024-2030 military programming law. Poland is investing massively. But results take time. Production chains cannot be built in a few months. Doctrines cannot be reformed by decree.
Imagine a Ukrainian operator, trained in three weeks, flying a 500-dollar FPV. He destroys a 10-million-dollar tank. Meanwhile, NATO soldiers are taking a break because the exercise is suspended for administrative reasons. Modern warfare does not wait for the break to end.
And Switzerland?
Switzerland has a militia army. One hundred and forty thousand men. Fifty-sixth in the world rankings. If the Bundeswehr, a professional army, gets decimated in an exercise by 500-dollar drones, where does an army of citizen-soldiers that trains three weeks a year stand?
The question is not a judgement. It is an equation. And for now, no one in Bern seems to want to solve it.
Europe has three years. Three years to close an industrial, cultural, and doctrinal gap. Three years to move from coffee breaks to the reality of the battlefield. Is anyone taking the measure of the problem?
