While the world watches Iran, Ukraine and the Middle East, North Korea is advancing. Forty to fifty nuclear warheads. Missiles capable of reaching American soil. A test site in full activity. And no one is reacting.
On 27 July 2026, Kim Yo Jong, the sister of the North Korean leader, rejected ASEAN’s call for denuclearisation. She described the request as a “hostile act”. Pyongyang considers itself a “responsible nuclear state”. A phrase that should have made headlines. It went unnoticed.
The Programme That Is Advancing
Forty to fifty nuclear warheads. Six to ten additional warheads produced each year. The Hwasong-18, an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the continental United States. The Hwasong-19, in advanced development, with solid-fuel propulsion that will make it harder to intercept.
The Punggye-ri test site is showing signs of activity. The Sohae launch site is being rebuilt. The North Korean nuclear machine is running at full capacity. And the world is looking elsewhere.
The Perfect Circumvention
Sanctions? Full of holes. China supplies oil, food and raw materials. Russia exchanges military technology and satellites for artillery shells for Ukraine. A win-win barter. Moscow gains ammunition. Pyongyang gains missile technology. Two isolated regimes strengthening each other.
And then there is the Lazarus Group. The greatest bank robbers in history. Over 1.5 billion dollars stolen in cryptocurrency since 2017. This money funds the nuclear programme. A state financing its defence through digital theft. A unique case in history. And no one can stop it.
China and Russia block any new sanctions at the UN Security Council. The system is locked.
Calculated Indifference
Why is no one reacting? Three reasons.
Saturation, first. Iran, Ukraine, the Middle East, Taiwan. The world no longer has the attention span for a fourth front. North Korea is taking advantage of this background noise to advance without making waves.
The failure of sanctions, second. Twenty years of economic pressure. The result: fifty warheads. Sanctions have not worked. They never will. Pyongyang has adapted to isolation like an organism developing antibodies.
The risk, finally. A military option against North Korea? Seoul is less than an hour from an artillery deluge. Millions of civilians under threat. No American president will take that risk. Pyongyang knows it.
The American Admission
The White House has stated that the denuclearisation of North Korea is no longer a short-term priority. This is not a statement. It is an admission.
Washington is de facto accepting a nuclear North Korea. As it accepted a nuclear Pakistan. As it accepts a nuclear Israel. The precedent is set. Other states are watching. And taking note.
How far can North Korea go without a reaction? Fifty warheads today. One hundred in five years. Missiles increasingly precise, increasingly difficult to intercept. The world has chosen indifference. Pyongyang has chosen the atom. And for now, no one seems to want to change this equation.
