And then silence. Iran did not fold. The cards collapsed one by one. Today, Trump has no honourable exit. He can play one more round — after that, it’s game over. Everyone is watching him. And everyone is leaving.
The Deal That Does Not Exist
Trump announces a suspension of strikes. He speaks of a “deal” on the Strait of Hormuz. The news travels around the world.
Iran denies it within the hour. Fars News quotes a member of the negotiating team: no deal. The Strait of Hormuz remains closed. Esmaeil Baghaei, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, confirms it coldly.
The Iranian division is a staged performance. Araghchi, the minister, negotiates. Baghaei, the spokesman, locks down. Iran speaks with one voice — the one that says no.
Trump has announced a victory that does not exist. It is the ultimate bluff. But a bluff the opponent no longer believes.
The Base That Is Crumbling
Marjorie Taylor Greene is not an adversary. She is the embodiment of MAGA, the heart of the Trumpist electorate. And she is turning against him.
“Your illegal war against Iran is crushing the people who voted for you,” she said, targeting the petrol prices strangling working-class families. Newsweek headlines: “Greene Accuses Trump of Breaking Promises on Iran.”
Trump reportedly called her a “traitor”. Tucker Carlson and Greene are said to be launching a new party. The movement that brought him to power is fracturing. The base that forgave him everything is not forgiving him the price of a gallon.
The Allies Who Are Fleeing
Mohammed bin Salman calls Trump on 1 August. Not to support him. To urge him to de-escalate. The Saudi Defence Minister speaks of “de-escalation”. The Gulf states are asking for additional interceptors — a sign they no longer feel protected by Washington.
Saudi Arabia, the pillar of the American alliance in the region, is saying no to the war. The protector has become a fire-starter. The protected are seeking other protectors.
The Numbers That Condemn
Thirty-eight per cent approval. That is the figure from the AP-NORC survey of 30 July 2026. Most Americans believe the war in Iran was not worth it. The curve has been falling since February, since the start of hostilities.
Trump built his political career on victory. On the image of the winner. Today, he is losing. The polls, the street, his own base. He cannot run again — the 22nd Amendment prevents it. Two terms, full stop. He has only two years left, and he is spending them losing.
The New York Times That Buries
On 1 August 2026, the New York Times headlines: “In Iran, the U.S. Appears Headed for a Strategic Defeat, Allies Fear.” The quote is clinical: “To America’s allies, President Trump’s war in Iran, now in its sixth month, seems headed for a strategic defeat.”
On 16 July, the same newspaper wrote: “In Iran, Trump Risks Another American ‘Forever War’.”
The newspaper of the American establishment is writing what everyone is thinking. The die is cast.
The Last Card
Trump has no honourable exit left. He can try to limit the damage, but militarily he can play one more round — after that, it’s over. Diplomatically, everyone is abandoning him. His approval rating is falling relentlessly.
The man who wanted to restore America’s glory has lost everything. By playing politics like a poker game, he is plunging his country into a painful internal crisis. Iran is standing. Hormuz is closed. The allies are fleeing. The base is rebelling.
When you have built your career on victory, what remains when everyone has left the table?
