While the world watches Iran, Russia is advancing in Ukraine.
Four localities liberated in two days. Shevchenko, Torskoye, Kommunarovka, Kovsharivka. Names that mean nothing to anyone. But they trace a methodical, patient, inexorable advance. The push toward Kupiansk is significant. It is a major logistical hub for the Ukrainian army. If the city falls, the entire northeastern front wobbles.
The Russian army is not breaking through. It is nibbling. But it is advancing.
The Black Sea, a Closing Trap
The Golden Leo has sunk. A Turkish bulk carrier, hit off the coast of Odessa. Two other vessels struck in the Dnieper-Bug estuary. For four days, no ship has entered the port of Odessa. Zero. Maersk has suspended its operations. Ukraine is cut off from the Black Sea.
It is a blockade that does not speak its name. No spectacular naval battle. No aircraft carriers. Just surgical, methodical strikes, emptying the sea of its ships one by one.
Odessa is suffocating. And with it, the Ukrainian economy.
Western Aid Is Crumbling
The $400 million U.S. aid package is frozen. Until 2029. Not suspended. Frozen. A major political signal sent by Washington. The message is clear: Ukraine is no longer a priority.
In Europe, cracks are appearing. Greece has obtained an exemption on Russian liquefied natural gas in the 21st sanctions package. A first. Hungary is blocking Ukraine’s EU membership. Poland is showing signs of fatigue. Hate crimes against Ukrainians have been reported in Pลock.
The British Stone Cloak system has been transferred to Ukraine. An intellectual property transfer, not hardware. Technology, not ammunition. A consolation prize.
The Ratio That Speaks
On July 16, a body exchange took place. 501 Ukrainian remains against 31 Russian. A ratio of 16 to 1.
This is not a number. It is a revelation. Of the state of the forces. Of the effectiveness of tactics. Of the reality on the ground. Every day, Ukraine loses sixteen times more men than Russia.
The Zaporizhzhia Plant
A Ukrainian drone killed the plant’s chief engineer and his driver on July 15. The IAEA condemns the attack. The nuclear risk remains unchanged. But the incident is a reminder that Zaporizhzhia is a permanent point of tension, a sword of Damocles hanging over the continent.
How long can Ukraine hold out without U.S. aid? The answer will determine the course of the war. No one knows it. But the freezing of $400 million is a signal. The Golden Leo sinking is another. The war of attrition is changing sides.
