Spain is burning. July 2026 is the worst month since 2001. Seventy-seven thousand hectares reduced to ashes, thirty-two major fires, twelve dead. The province of รvila alone has lost fifty thousand hectares.

And at the Guadalajara base, ten helicopters are sleeping in their hangars. Grounded. Since 2024.

The Country’s Best Firefighting Helicopters

The Kamov Ka-32A11BC are exceptional machines. Over five thousand litres of water per mission. Designed for mountainous terrain and high-temperature conditions. They operated in Andalusia, Aragon, Extremadura, and Guadalajara. Until Brussels decided otherwise.

European sanctions against Russia prohibit access to spare parts and manufacturer-certified maintenance. Russian technicians can no longer intervene. The fleet is paralysed.

Ten helicopters grounded. Thousands of litres of water that will never be dropped.

“Buy Airbus”

Madrid did not even request an exemption. Why? Because Brussels has already answered: Spain “has had enough time to find European alternatives.” Meaning: buy Airbus.

Replacement helicopters exist. But they are more expensive to operate. And their performance in extreme conditions โ€” mountains, heat โ€” is not comparable.

The result: fewer resources, more flames.

Sovereignty Trampled

Spain is a sovereign state. It has the right to acquire the means it deems useful for protecting its population and its territory. Brussels does not give it that choice.

The Commission’s tone โ€” “you’ve had enough time to buy European” โ€” is that of a guardian scolding a child. Not a partner dealing with a member state.

And the hypocrisy is total. The European armaments that Brussels touts as an alternative are themselves full of American components, imported technologies, and globalised supply chains. Sanctions against Russia are brandished as a moral standard โ€” but when it comes to buying Russian gas through Indian intermediaries, or letting European companies continue to trade with Moscow through subsidiaries, the rigour evaporates.

Spain was not granted that flexibility. Its helicopters are grounded. Its forests are burning. And Brussels is explaining that it should have chosen its suppliers better.

This is not European solidarity. It is a guardianship that deprives a people of its means of survival โ€” and presumes to lecture them while their homes burn.

The Human Cost

While the Ka-32s rust in their hangars, 77,000 hectares are burning. Twelve people have died. Thousands more have been evacuated. Spanish agriculture is losing its harvests. Tourism is collapsing. And Brussels is maintaining its sanctions.

The question is no longer geopolitical. It is human.

A bureaucracy that would rather see a country burn than admit that its sanctions have unforeseen consequences โ€” that is no longer politics. It is a failure paid for in human lives. And it is also the denial of a member state’s right to choose the tools of its own survival.

The Ashes of Brussels

The EU has chosen its sanctions. Spain is counting its dead. The Ka-32s will not take off this summer. The forests will continue to burn.

And somewhere in Brussels, someone will think that punishing Russia was worth 77,000 hectares of ashes.

Sanctions are a weapon. But when the weapon turns against those it is supposed to protect, it is no longer a weapon. It is a mistake. And mistakes, in politics, are paid for in human lives.
